RAJINDER KAUR

My journey with Gurbani Kirtan started when I was a child. My parents got me a tutor to teach me Kirtan when I was in the 6th grade. I loved music, so I decided to get a Master's Degree in Indian Classical Music. Along the way, I met Professor Surinder Singh (Yogi of Sound) who taught me about the instruments our Gurus have made for Gurmat Kirtan. This meeting made me feel connected to the spiritual and musical traditions of Gurbani Kirtan.

To learn more, I studied for a Bachelor of Music (BMus) degree at the University of West London under Professor Surinder Singh. In my studies, I learned how to perform  using specific musical styles from Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. This education not only taught me about music and musical styles, but also deepened my understanding of the spiritual side of Kirtan.

I have been blessed to learn Gurbani Kirtan and Rabab from Rajinder Kaur Ji for the past 12 years. Her vast knowledge in Gurmat Kirtan and string instruments, has deeply enriched my understanding of Kirtan. She is not just an exceptional teacher but also a guiding force in my life. Her humility, kindness, and dedication have shaped my journey of learning Kirtan and devotion for Gurbani. She has advised and supported me like an elder sister, always encouraging me to grow. I am truly grateful for her wisdom and selfless guidance.

I have been learning the Dilruba for a while now, guided by the inspirational Rajinder Panji. Her loving and calm teaching style, combined with her inspiring stories, has made this journey deeply spiritual. I am currently on Grade 3, which I feel is a significant achievement within a year. With Rajinder Panji’s support, I have been able to connect to the Shabad through this beautiful instrument. I am determined to continue this journey, aiming to complete all the grades with Maharaj’s kirpa and Rajinder Panji’s encouraging guidance. Her mentorship has truly enriched my learning experience.

 The Journey

My journey is about learning, reflecting, and connecting through Gurmat Kirtan. My goal is to share this knowledge with others while continuing to learn and grow myself.

Kirtan is more than just music—it's a way to find inner peace, self-discovery, and spiritual growth. By sharing this gift with others, I hope to inspire them to start their own transformative journeys and experience the healing power of Gurbani Kirtan.

Towards my Guru

I learned that the mood of the music, called Raag, is important in connecting with the Sbad deeply. Each Raag has a unique emotional tone that can bring comfort, calmness, and inner peace. Understanding this helped me bridge the gap between music and spirituality, making my Kirtan experience more meaningful.
