M.Mus Sikh / Indian Music (Performance / Composition)
M.Mus Indian/Sikh music and MA Nad Yoga are two exciting new courses giving you access to learn about Indian music in a whole new way with the opportunity to become a highly adept and knowledgeable musician.Each programme takes a slightly different approach to the study of Indian music:
- M.Mus Sikh / Indian Music focuses more to train talented performers and lead them to technical mastery of their instrument.
- MA Nád Yoga stresses the musicological aspect of sound, concentrating on the effects of music on mind, body and spirit in order to diagnose and apply the healing qualities of this science.
M.Mus Sikh / Indian Music (Performance / Composition)
This is an in-depth study of Indian / Sikh music, catering for those who wish to further their musical performance abilities and specialise in a particular area. Students will have the chance to build their solo performance skills and incorporate improvisation to a high standard. Composition guidance will also be given and students will be expected to produce work of an advanced standard. Workshops and master-classes will be led by well-known, visiting performers who will guide students through the process of preparing for instrumental solos and jugalbandis.
The Master of Music degree is designed to support performers who wish to add a professional edge to their practical skills. This is combined with academic study, to create professional musicians with the skills and knowledge to work with independence, and have the confidence to grow and develop within the working world.
Course Modules
- Instrument Studies: This provides you with the opportunity to devote time to your chosen instrument, exploring the manufacturing process of the instruments.
- Performance/Composition Workshop: This will enhance your practical performance skills through a master class approach, and build upon your ability to compose.
- Music and Musicology: (two modules) Music and performance will be analysed both from a musicology perspective. It requires the ability to investigate and critically evaluate music in detail. Students will have an opportunity to research and prepare a lecture-recital of 35 minutes.
- Dissertation: 10,000 words on a particular area of interest related to Sikh / Indian music performance and/or composition.
