Discover the Ancient Tradition of Sound Healing with Raj Academy
13-03-2010
This month Kala Sangam will host two events from the world-renowned Raj Academy. On Saturday 13th March, Professor Surinder Singh will give a lecture and workshop at Kala Sangam, and on Sunday 14th March he will give a concert, the venue for which is yet to be confirmed.
The lecture and workshop will begin with an introduction by Professor Singh to Gurmat Sangeet, the art of singing and playing hymns from the Sikh scripture Siri Guru Granth Sahib. There will then be an opportunity for participants to hold and play the ancient musical instruments that are used to accompany these hymns.

Audience member David Dufton attended an earlier workshop by Raj Academy at Kala Sangam and commented favourably about "how relaxed I was at apparently being the only 'white, western Christian' at the lecture." David added that "despite being an elderly Westerner and finding it uncomfortable getting down, sitting, and getting up from the floor, I did feel at ease with people who had been used to such seating arrangements all their lives!"

Raj Academy of Asian Music, founded by Professor Surinder Singh in 1994, is the world's largest school for Sikh and traditional Indian music. The Academy teaches the traditional, classical style of playing and reciting hymns using exquisitely-constructed instruments rarely seen today, such as the rabaab, saranda, jori and dilruba.

Professor Singh has written two books, Secrets of Sikh Music, and Composed Mind, in which he shares his insight into the effects of Sikh musicology on the human mind, and has extensive experience of performing and teaching Sikh music.

Reciting and playing Gurmat Sangeet is said to bring about holistic healing and spiritual growth.

Everyone is invited to experience this blissful music and discover its healing and uplifting qualities.

Places are free of charge and may be booked by calling 01274 303340 or emailing bryony@kalasangam.org. These events form part of the Kala Milan series of events, more information about which can be found at www.kalasangam.org.
