Rág VidhiaThe traditions of Sikh and Indian Music dwell deep in the ancient science of sound, which is no doubt one of the most powerful arts developed for mankind. Based on this science, the BMus study program has been set up to explore and experience the qualities of Sikh and traditional Indian music in depth and detail, providing students with specialist knowledge , as well as catering for those experiencing their first encounter with this sacred sound. The course builds also the foundation for the succeeding postgraduate study programs.
Content
The BMus Degree course aims to train students to a high standard of performance and composition of Sikh and traditional Indian music. One of the key features of this program is the implementation of introductory modules to musicology, covering the emotional and psychological effects of the rágs on the human psyche. During the course of this intense training, the student will develop a profound awareness about the impact music has on the listener as well as on the performer. The subject of musicology is unique to this course.
Intensive training is given in vocals as well as on instruments in a variety of different styles. The program comprises of workshops and master classes, group and solo perfomance opportunities, lectures and seminars. The close collaboration of all teachers on this program ensures that support is given throughout each stage of the course.
Year one allows students to become familiar with basic instrumentation and ornamentation, while exploring different research techniques. The second and third year provide students with a greater understanding of Sikh and Indian Music, from its musicological aspects to the techniques of improvisation within a given rág. Students will also have more opportunity to work independently on projects, as well as to perform their personally composed work to a large audience.
In the final year, students can choose to take an option module in music teaching, which enables them to apply their learnt knowledge once they graduated. This will allow them to further develop their potential and offers an additional career opportunity immediately after graduating. The course also proceeds to postgraduate level, which offers an M.Mus in Performance or an MA in Nád Yoga, exploring the healing properties of sacred music.
This course opens access to the teachings of Great Masters of Musicology from over 500 years ago, following a sacred tradition of spiritual healing through Nád (the science of sound). The knowledge gained from this study will not only uplift your inner being and you external life but also your material life by preparing you as a performer, composer, teacher, writer, music therapist, researcher or music manager, all depending on your personal aspirations. Combining musicology with technicality, degree holders will be equipped with the skills to work successfully in both the music industry as well as in the healing and therapy sector with confidence and independence.
